$Purchase of Remote Display Terminals (Contract DAHC15-73-C-0435)$16 October 1975∞
Dear Mr. Surra:

This is a request for approval to purchase ten remote display terminals
at a cost of about $25,000. These devices are required to perform our
ARPA-sponsored research program under the subject Contract. The
University is unable to provide sufficient funds from its own
resources to procure this equipment. There are sufficient funds
available under the existing contract to cover this cost.

The primary need for these terminals is in support of our research program
in Program Understanding Systems. That group needs access both to our
computer and, via the Ames TIP and the ARPAnet, to several other computer
facilities (e.g. ISI, Sumex, SRI-AI). The technical requirements that
must be met to fulfill this function include:
.begin preface 0; indent 4,8;
typing and display of full ASCII character set,

at least 72 characters per line and at least 24 lines on the screen,

full duplex modem with low data rate input (150 baud) and high data
rate output (1200 baud or better),

keyboard and command structure sufficient to support a page context
editor, such as our TV/E editors.
.end

There are, of course, a very large number of display terminals available
commercially with a bewildering array of features. We began examining
alternatives and securing demonstrations about eight months ago. Our
preliminary survey covered 42 candidate terminals. On the basis of
preliminary evaluations, we narrowed the choice to six terminals that
were given a more detailed examination.

Finally, we chose the least expensive terminal meeting our
objectives: the Datamedia Elite 2500A with special editing features
and Sumex Keyboard. With a suitable modem (we chose the Universal
Data Systems 1200/150 split baud rate, 202-compatible, originate
only) these terminals cost $2500 each, so that the total buy of 10
will cost $25,000.

If you need any more information on this proposed procurement, please
let me know.
